Battle of Velasco Memorial

Based on research which found an obscure newspaper article from Arkansas in 1833, it was discovered that a Monument was to be created for the Texians that died in the Battle of Velasco, largely by the survivors of that battle. However, such a monument does not appear to have actually been built, perhaps due to the fact of an 1833 cholera epidemic, political difficulties which might occur with the Mexican authorities, and the Texas Revolution of 1835-1836. The block known as Monument Square on the 1837 plat of Velasco is believed to have been named for this intended monument, and it is concluded to be the most likely location for the graves for the casualties of the battle. After some years of discussion, the Old Fort Velasco Historical Association led a community effort in 2022-2023 to create a modern version as close as possible to the original design as described in the newspaper article. Leslie Bryson of Bryson Memorials in Angleton TX provided a design using gray Georgia granite, and installed the monument during the period of May-June 2023. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on 13-Nov-2022, and the unveiling ceremony was held on 27-Jun-2023 (the 191st anniversary of the battle). Please see images of the design below, and come see our modern interpretation of the monument in person.
